| To meet the training needs of the unemployed
and other deprived sections in the society, the scheme of
Jan Shikshan Sansthans, (JSS) - Institute of Peoples' education
is in operation in India since 1967. This is an innovative
programme, sponsored by Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India which came into being as a result of discussions
between the Indian Government and UNESCO. The main objective
of Jan Shikshan Sansthan is to enrich the life of illiterates,
neo-literates, women, poor, down trodden, SC, ST, Handicapped,
slum dwellers, unemployed and semi skilled workers, through
education, create awareness to widen knowledge, improve occupational
skills through vocational training programmes. |

Good intentions, good policies, good decisions must turn into effective actions. The key to building an organization with such a spirit is by organizing the work so that everyone feels essential to a goal they believe in. Avinashilingam Jan Shikshan Sansthan was inaugurated on 2nd October 1984 by Shri.T.S.Avinashilingam in Coimbatore. |

As a Gandhian who practiced only what he preached, epitomized the words of Swami Vivekananda fit in for Late Shri T S Avinashilingam that 'They alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive.' He served in the first assembly of Tamilnadu state in the independent India as Education Minister. He lived for the ideals of serving the poor and empowering them. He dreamt for an Institution to serve the downtrodden and the deprived sections in the society, especially the rural mass to acquire gainful jobs by undergoing vocational training. His dream came true by starting Avinashilingam Jan Shikshan Sansthan on 02.10.1984 and guided as its Chairman till 21.11.1991. |

Following the footprints of Shri.T.S.Avinashilingam, Dr.Rajammal P.Devadas took charge as the Chairperson of AJSS and served till 17th March 2002. Dr. Rajammal Devadas was an internationally renowned nutritionist and an able administrator who had served in many governmental and international agencies. She was known for her keen enthusiasm for girls education, Women |

| empowerment, adult education and Community development. Under her able guidance and the dedicated contribution of the Director and staff, AJSS was awarded the coveted UNESCO-National Literacy Mission award for outstanding contribution in the field of Adult Education in the year 2001. |

Dr. K. Kulandaivel, a Gandhian follower, a veteran in the field of Education and administration,
succeeded Dr.Rajammal P.Devadas as Chairman and continued till 28.03.2007. His teaching and administrative experience over 4 decades helped the JSS to march forward as a model JSS in the country.

Sri.T.K.Shanmuganandham, a renowned advocate and known for his philanthropic activities succeeded Dr.K.Kulandaivel as the Chairman of Avinashilingam JSS till 24.11.2010. Being a multifaceted personality, Shri.T.K.Shanmuganandam guided AJSS for extending its operations to every nook and corner of the district. |
